Bulging or Herniated Discs
A Herniated Disc or Bulging Disc (Spinal Disc Herniation) is a medical condition that affects the spine. The tissues between the vertebrae or the bones in the spine are called intervertebral discs. These discs are composed of a soft centre and a tough outer lining. Discs create a joint between each of the bones in the spine and act as shock absorbers for the spine and keep the spine flexible, which allows for movement. When the tough outer lining that surrounds the disc tears, the soft centre squeezes out through the tear, creating a Herniated Disc. Disc Herniation is usually due to age related degeneration of the outer fibrous ring of the intervertebral disc, however, trauma, lifting injuries, or straining can also cause a Herniated Disc. Most Herniated Discs occur in the lumbar spine (lower back), although they can also occur in the cervical spine (the neck). Herniated Discs could cause pain, numbness or tingling or weakness in the area of the herniation.
Cause or Possible Risk Factors
- Herniated discs are caused by aging, degeneration of the disc (disc disease) or injury to the spine
- Severe trauma such as a car accident or repetitive stress from extended sitting or heavy lifting
- Unhealthy diet
- Genetics
- Being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle
Symptoms
- Back, arm or leg pain
- Numbness or a tingling sensation in the leg and/or foot
- Weakness in the leg and/or foot
