Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus (sometimes called hallux limitus) is arthritis in the big toe joint. The joint stiffens, pushing off becomes painful, and walking starts to feel awkward. Custom orthotics can offload the joint, and targeted manual therapy plus exercises can keep the toe moving. Early treatment is important, once the joint fuses fully, surgical options become the main path.

What Hallux Rigidus feels like

  • Pain and stiffness in the joint at the base of the big toe during use (walking, standing, bending, etc.) that is aggravated by cold, damp weather
  • Swelling and inflammation around the joint
  • A bump, like a bunion or callus, that develops on the top of the foot
  • Stiffness in the great toe and an inability to bend it up or down
  • Difficulty with certain activities (running, squatting)

Common causes of Hallux Rigidus

  • Trauma
  • Faulty foot biomechanics
  • Overuse
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or other inflammatory diseases
  • Genetics
