Radiculopathy
Radiculopathy is the medical term for nerve pain travelling from your spine into an arm or leg. It happens when a nerve root is pinched or irritated — most often by a disc, bone spur, or arthritic change. Symptoms include shooting pain, pins and needles, numbness, and weakness. Most cases resolve with physiotherapy, traction, and targeted exercise; surgery is reserved for severe nerve compression.
Common causes of Radiculopathy
- Affected nerves may be inflamed, pinched (compressed), or working ineffectively due to a lack of blood flow or trauma
- Mechanical compression of the nerves is from a tumor or infection
- Diabetes which can decrease the normal blood flow to the spinal nerves
- Degeneration can lead to radiculopathy from direct irritation of the nerves
- Pinched nerves, bone spurs, spinal stenosis, and foraminal stenosis.
