Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa — a small fluid-filled sac that cushions a joint. The most common spots are the hip, shoulder, knee, and elbow. The hallmark is tenderness right over the joint, pain when you press it, and sharp pain with certain movements. Usually it responds well to a short break from the aggravating activity combined with manual therapy and ultrasound therapy.
What Bursitis feels like
- Achy or stiff sensations
- Increased pain when the affected area is moved or pressed
- Sharp or shooting pain, especially when exercising or under physical exertion
- Tenderness is felt even without movement
- Swelling and redness
- Loss of movement
Common causes of Bursitis
- Repetitive motions or positions that irritate the bursae around a joint
- Repetitive, minor impact on the area or from a sudden, more serious injury
- Leaning on the elbows for long periods of time
- Extensive kneeling for tasks such as laying carpet or scrubbing floors
- Prolonged sitting, particularly on hard surfaces
